Link building is the process of getting other websites to link back to your website. This is important because search engines like Google use backlinks as a way to determine the authority and relevance of a website. The more high-quality backlinks a website has, the more likely it is to rank higher in search engine results pages (SERPs).
Adam Enfroy says “if link building isn’t a part of your blog strategy you’re never going to reach your full revenue potential”.
So here’s a summary of Adam Enfroy’s 6 Best New Link Building Tips for 2023.

1. Build Topical Authority and Content Clusters
Topical authority refers to being an expert in a specific topic or industry. Creating top-quality comprehensive content that provides unique angles and ideas is essential to stand out and get links.
Getting ahead of the news cycle
Show your expertise by being at the forefront of your topic. Be one of the first to publish a noteworthy news article on a topic, or be the first to discuss a new trend or emerging topic and give your take on it. Then other sites will likely link to your overview or commentary on the topic, as it’s a ‘new’ thing and not much has been published about it yet, and you’re seen as an authority on the topic.
Create unique, linkable resources and tools
This is useful content such as a statistics article, trends report, or infographics. Journalists may need to cite industry statistics for an article they’re writing, and so may cite your statistic, research, and findings in their article.
Or create a useful or fun digital tool and make it available on your site. These are things like mortgage calculators, business or domain name generators, an AI recipe generator, or a Wordle-type game. Then news and niche sites will link to your online tool as a service to their audience.
Create content clusters to help with building topical authority
Content clusters involve creating a group of interlinked articles that cover a specific topic in-depth. This approach helps to establish topical authority and provides a better user experience by giving readers access to related content.
You can use AI tools such as SurgeGraph which has a keyword research and a keyword planner tool to help you strategically map out your keywords into content silos.
You can then use AI writing tools like ChatGPT, SurgeGraph, or KoalaWriter to help you outline and write a lot of articles in your niche and sub-niche quickly, showing Google you’re a topic authority on the subject.
2. Answering Journalists’ Queries and Networking with News Outlets and Journalists
Help a Reporter Out (HARO)
HARO is a platform that connects journalists with sources for their stories. By responding to relevant queries on HARO, bloggers can position themselves as experts in their niche and potentially get featured in top news sites and blogs.
Other platforms include SourceBottle and Qwoted.
Networking with news outlets and journalists
If you’re a smaller blogger, one way you can start to build relationships with journalists is to research and identify those who cover topics related to your niche. Follow them on social media, engage with their content, and share their articles.
If you have unique insights or data related to a breaking news story, reach out to the relevant reporter and offer to provide a quote or analysis. If they use your input in their article, they may include a link back to your site. You can reach out to them directly via email or through a professional networking platform like LinkedIn.
3. Strategic Guest Posting and Link Exchanges
In addition to high-quality content, high-quality guest blogging is also important. The objective is to find relevant high-quality and high-DR (domain ranking) sites to write for.
Strategic Guest Posting
Adam talks about strategic guest posting. For example, look at brands in your niche that you want to become an affiliate for. So if want to rank for the keywords ‘email marketing software’, then you could approach the big players in that niche such as MailChimp or ConvertKit to see if you can write a guest post on their site.
Link Exchange Groups
Join general or niche blogging, affiliate marketing, or link exchange groups on Facebook and other platforms and online communities. Start engaging with members’ posts and opportunities to collaborate on content, exchange links, and the opportunity to contribute guest posts will arise over time.
For example, Adam’s Blog Growth Engine students have access to a link exchange group on Slack. You can build a 3 or 5-way link exchange with a group of people, rather than just a direct 1–1 link exchange between two parties. A person may be writing a guest post and can add 5 to 10 links in those articles to other people’s sites in the same or complementary niche. This happens as a result of reaching out, helping others, and building relationships.
4. Creating Passive Link Generators
Passive link generators are a great way to get links from your articles and tools. These include statistics and trends posts, calculators, and generators that use AI to get interesting links passively over time.
These passive link generators could be in the form of useful reference content such as a statistics or trends article which journalists may want to look up and cite for an article they’re writing.
For example, a journalist may be writing a piece on YouTube content creators and wants to know the number of YouTube creators in the world. If they Google ‘number of YouTube creators’ then the first result on Google atm is an article published by Exploding Topics titled: YouTube Content Creator Statistics (2023). This article tells us that there are currently around 60 million YouTube creators in the world. So a journalist may use this statistic in their article and cite your article as a reference, therefore giving you a backlink.
Another type of passive link generator is in the form of interactive tools such as online mortgage calculators, name generators, and tools.
An example is Ahrefs, a premium SEO tool with monthly plans that start at USD$99/month. But fortunately, they also have a great set of free SEO tools including a Keyword Generator, Backlink Checker, and Broken Link Checker. A blogger writing an article on Free SEO Tools might include a mention of the free SEO tools Ahrefs offers, therefore giving a backlink to the Ahrefs site.
Other examples include MyBib, a free APA, Harvard, & MLA citation generator and Namy.ai, an AI business name and domain name generator. Bloggers may link to these types of tools on the ‘tools and resources’ page of their website to help their audience.
You can use AI and no-code tools to create useful content and interactive tools to add to your own website relatively easily, and these assets work like link magnets.
5. Building Natural and Relevant Links
Adam says to future-proof your link building efforts, your links need to look as natural as possible and are relevant to your site.
This means not relying solely on guest posts that just link directly to your website’s homepage, or too many reciprocal 1–1 link exchanges. Create 1-many link exchanges, and create useful resources and tools sites want to cite and link to. Also, networking with news outlets and journalists can help build relationships and secure natural looking high-quality backlinks.
Also try to ensure the backlinks from other sites link to different articles on your site and use a variety of different anchor text keywords. The surrounding content needs to have relevant context as well, so it all reads well and makes sense.
6. Avoiding low-quality link-building practices and irrelevant guest posting
The process of link building has evolved significantly over the years, with the focus now being on high-quality content creation and guest blogging. Low-quality link building techniques such as PBN’s (private blog networks), directory submissions, and low-quality reciprocal links and low-quality guest posts are no longer effective. Instead, the emphasis is on creating unique, valuable content that provides a unique perspective and experience, and creating useful tools.
Avoid platforms where freelancers offer link building and guest posting services for a super cheap price. These short-cuts will hurt your authority as Google will see these links and posts as spammy and not authentic.
